Anne Boden, MBE, is a most unusual banker. After a distinguished career working in senior leadership at some of the world’s best-known financial heavyweights, among them Allied Irish Banks, Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland, she set out to build her own mobile-only bank from scratch in 2014. She raised $70 million of funding and obtained a full banking licence in 2016, launching Starling’s first account in 2017. Since then, the bank has completed more successful funding rounds. It now operates current accounts for individuals and small businesses and expects to have opened one million accounts by the end of 2019. The Starling Marketplace, Europe’s first fully integrated financial marketplace, provides the bank’s current account customers with access to third-party financial services in a compelling example of Open Banking in action. Starling’s Banking Services B2B division makes the bank’s proprietary best-in-class banking and payments infrastructure (“Banking-as-a-Service”) available to third parties.
